‘Leave Britney Alone’ YouTuber Subject of New Documentary
You may not know Chris Crocker’s name, but if you were on the Internet back in 2007 there’s no way you don’t know his work. During the height of the paparazzi’s obsession with Britney Spears, Crocker became an overnight national figure thanks to his impassioned plea for the press to “Leave Britney Alone” on his YouTube channel.
Instantly, the already popular video blogger became the butt of late-night TV jokes, and the poster child of the minute for our celebrity obsessed culture. Yet, the story of Crocker has more layers than that, as filmmakers Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch set out to prove with their new documentary Me at the Zoo (the title is a reference to the first video ever posted on YouTube), which is raising a round of completion funding on Kickstarter.
Moukarbels and Veatch‘s film will tell the story of born outsider Crocker, using his story to illustrate the emerging phenomenon of internet celebrity.
